The Purpose of the Michigan: A State of Success Summit

In 2009, with the state of Michigan plunged deep in recession, small business marketing and management consultant Ron Marshall had a conversation with a local entrepreneur and friend of his and asked, “What does Michigan need most?” His friend answered, “Hope.” That idea sparked Ron’s effort to put together an event that would become the basis for a Michigan-positive movement.

In 2011, while teaching at the Ferndale Career Center, Ron and fellow trainer Heather Coleman-Voss rallied great speakers and other participants interested in making the idea a success and put together the first Summit with the help of Ferndale Public Schools.

With no marketing budget, attendance was at maximum capacity for the venue. The event was a trending topic in the state of Michigan that day, reaching over 160,000 people. The participants were excited about building on it and doing more, but other projects put it on the back burner.

But, Michigan residents are still looking for hope. Our hope is that the MI Success movement becomes much larger than us and recurring event, something that brings together Michigan’s hopeless and hopeful to show them that this state is full of opportunities and provides the pathways to find them and succeed.
